Personal Backups with rdiff-backup

Here's a little article about backing up your own personal data safely.

I wrote it because it seems this kind of solutions are not very well known.

While not a real, serious backup strategy, it's pretty safe, as long as the system still lives, you can recover your data.

Oh, it's not only for personal data. I use it for backing up my server to another machine over the network. :-)

Roberto Alsina / 2006-04-03 06:29:

Well, I meant it more about my lame shell scripts ;-)

The only problems I see with rdiff-backup are:

* by the way it stores stuff (mirror+reverse diffs) the latest backup is always big, and you can´t spread it over media like traditonal backups

* It lacks policy automation facilities, which you need to do by hand.

It´s more an archiving tool than a backup tool, really.

But it´s a really cool archiving tool :-)

You'll want to escape those dots when grepping.

if echo "$folder" | grep ..

should probably be

if echo "$folder" | grep \.\.

Roberto Alsina / 2006-04-03 06:35:

Tomun, you're completely right.

In fact, the script I actually use has them escaped! I wonder how I forgot it on the article :-P

I'll correct it in a minute.

Jesus, I am not sure I understand what you mean. Can you explain a little?

Jesus P / 2006-04-03 06:37:

Hey I wanted to have just more scripts or examples or ideas of how to use the rdiff-backup. I want very deep into it , it's easy, and effective.

Thanks,

Jesus
